Biography
Simone Werner is an award-winning, passionate journalist who was born and raised in Severna Park, Maryland. She is a recent magna cum laude graduate from the University of Miami, where she obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Communication. She majored in Journalism, with an emphasis on Broadcast Journalism, and had a minor in Motion Pictures Production. Driven by her love for a busy, buzzing studio environment, Werner aspires to continue to develop her career in live television.
As she completed her final semester, Werner worked as a content producer at NBC6 South Florida. Werner created graphics, edited videos, and wrote high-quality breaking news, sports, and human interest copy on Dalet Galaxy. In the four months Werner worked at NBC6, she wrote 891 stories that aired, and produced dozens of afternoon tease cut-ins. At NBC6, Werner discovered how much she enjoys thinking on her feet in fast-paced work environments.
This past fall, Werner interned at ABC’s “The View.” In the mornings, she prepared the greenrooms for the show's celebrity guests with the items on their riders and stood-in for the co-hosts during rehearsals. If show guests had any other interviews within 24 hours of the show, Werner transcribed the segment and noted visual elements for the segment producers. In the afternoons, she organized giveaways, pitched ten pop-culture and political hot topics for the next show, tracked the show's upcoming guests’ segments on other networks through online media releases, went on production runs, and screened fan mail. She had to complete her tasks under tight deadlines while also remaining readily available to assist any production department at any time, further honing her time management and problem-solving skills.
This past summer, Werner interned at WNBC’s “New York Live.” She produced live interview segments with celebrity guests every week. To prepare, She conducted in-depth research packets on the guests’ backgrounds and current projects, came up with interview questions, wrote the copy, and edited supporting videos. Werner also edited videos for NYL’s social media, searched online for unique restaurants and recreational activities to cover, and scheduled field shoots. While strengthening her lifestyle and entertainment producing skills, she also gained confidence in working with celebrity talent and publicists.
During the summer of 2023, Werner was a news-producing intern at NBC6 South Florida. She wrote over 400 stories, ranging from headlines, teases, VOs, SOTVOs, and more. Werner was the only intern asked to produce two, hour-long newscasts and dozens of cut-ins. She also boothed shows, staged sets, ran scripts, cut video, and shadowed reporters in the field. Her managers also assigned her to cover court proceedings during former President Donald Trump’s arraignment in Miami for the classified documents case. She relayed courtroom happenings to the newsdesk in real-time, giving timely updates from the payphones inside the courthouse.
In 2022, Werner worked as a Freelance Assignment Desk Editor at CBS 4 News in Miami. She was responsible for newsgathering, fact-checking, documenting news updates on iNews, assigning crews to stories, and communicating between CBS departments. She newsgathered by listening to local scanners, speaking with PIOs, scrolling through Twitter, and answering desk phone calls. Werner also wrote and published several articles for the Digital News team.
While working at both television stations, Werner fell in love with turning hard facts into meaningful and powerful stories. She also discovered how much she enjoys multi-tasking and thinking on her feet in a rapidly changing work environment.
Werner is also very involved with her college's television, UMTV. She was awarded the Rex Pompadur Award at the University of Miami for her outstanding involvement at the station her freshman year of college. Simone has also been a producer and contributor to several UMTV shows that have been nominated for Suncoast Television Awards and College Television Awards, including NewsVision, SportsDesk, and Magazine Programs. She currently acts as a director, producer, anchor, reporter, and technical director. By the end of her first semester working at the station, Werner was invited to co-video produce Sportsdesk (UMTV’s award-winning, live sports show) and associate produce Off the Wire (UMTV’s late-night comedy show). As the semesters progressed, Werner has become a producer for UMTV’s award-winning live news show, NewsVision. Werner stacks the show, researches stories, and writes copy on ENPS. She is also the director, video producer, and segment host for UMTV’s live sports show: SportsDesk. As director, she make timely calls during live broadcasts to bring the show to life. As VP, she cuts University of Miami game highlights and edits pre-taped segments. As host of “Off the Bench,” Werner creates bi-weekly packages about club sports at U.M. While working on UMTV, she has also learned how to prepare interview questions, write for broadcast, technical direct, crew live shots, run prompter, and operate cameras.
Werner is also a member of the President's 100 at the University of Miami, which is a select student group of 100 individuals who serve as campus ambassadors and tour guides at the University. Werner is also an active member of Delta Kappa Alpha, a professional cinematic arts fraternity, to network her way into the world of cinema. She is also an active member of Chi Omega's Upsilon Delta chapter.
But, Werner did not always know that film and television were her passions. During her senior year of high school, Werner committed to a different university to study engineering. But, when COVID-19 broke out in March 2020, Werner decided to take a gap year. During this time off, Werner first discovered her love for live television while working for Elizabeth Werner LLC. She was hired to help broadcast live television from home, rather than in studio. In one month, Simone Werner taught herself how to set decorate, edit video footage, shoot B-Roll, communicate with producers, and assist during live shows. This work inspired her to change her previous plan of study (engineering) to film and broadcast journalism.
In her free time, Werner loves to read thrillers, run with her New York City run club, volunteer, take dance classes, attend trivia nights, and sing. If you ever find her at a karaoke club, you will most definitely see her sing (or scream) “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood. It will not be sung on key, but it will surely be an entertaining sight.
